Enrichment

Enrichment at Kings Heath Primary School

Confident, Curious, Caring

At Kings Heath Primary School, we want every child to discover new interests, develop their talents and experience the excitement of trying something new. Our enrichment offer brings learning to life, broadens horizons and creates memories that children carry with them beyond primary school.

Our ethos of “Nurturing ambition, achievement, respect and happiness” shapes these opportunities. From meeting an author to performing on stage, exploring nature or taking on a leadership role, we help children grow in confidence, independence and ambition.

Work hard, play harder! We value achievement, creativity, adventure and the joy of childhood.

Five areas of enrichment

Our approach reflects the Department for Education’s five enrichment areas, alongside experiences that deepen children’s understanding of the curriculum.

Arts and culture

Discovering talents and finding a voice

Music, art, literature, dance and drama give children opportunities to express themselves and experience different cultures. Our programme includes author visits and WordPlay activities, choir and music tuition, visiting performers, creative workshops, museum visits and school productions.

Children experience the arts as both participants and audiences, developing imagination, confidence and an appreciation of others’ creativity.

Sport and physical activity

Being active, working together and taking on challenges

We encourage children to enjoy movement, develop skills and experience the satisfaction of personal improvement. Opportunities include sports clubs, house competitions, Sports Day, swimming and activities such as Bikeability, scooter and skateboard training.

Through sport and active play, children learn teamwork, perseverance, fair play and respect.

Nature, outdoors and adventure

Exploring, experimenting and growing in independence

Outdoor experiences encourage curiosity about the natural world and help children become confident explorers. Local walks, visits, outdoor learning and the Year 6 residential extend learning beyond the classroom.

Our OPAL play programme makes everyday play an important part of this experience. Building dens, experimenting with loose parts and creating games give children opportunities to solve problems, negotiate, collaborate and make thoughtful decisions about risk.

Civic engagement

Having a voice and making a difference

We want children to understand that their views matter and that they can contribute positively to their school and community.

Pupil voice, leadership opportunities and our Rights Respecting approach help children learn about responsibility, fairness and the rights of others. They practise listening, representing different viewpoints and taking action to improve the world around them.

Wider life and future skills

Building independence and looking ahead

Enrichment helps children develop practical skills and see possibilities for their futures. Experiences such as cooking, design projects, science workshops, money workshops and encounters with visitors help connect classroom learning with everyday life.

Children develop communication, problem-solving and organisational skills, while learning that their interests and talents can open doors to future opportunities.

Enrichment for every child

Every child should have opportunities to participate, belong and succeed.

We recognise that children have different starting points and may need different support to access the same opportunities. We take a deliberate approach to identifying barriers, encouraging participation and supporting children who may otherwise miss out.

This includes a particular focus on disadvantaged pupils, children with SEND and those who need extra encouragement to take their first step. We work with families to consider practical support and adaptations so that children can participate meaningfully.

A journey of experiences

Our enrichment programme develops as children move through the school. Visits, visitors, workshops and special events are planned to complement learning, introduce new experiences and build on what children have encountered before.

Our year-group enrichment roadmaps show this journey. Activities vary across the year, and families receive details of arrangements through school communications.

Listening and improving

We listen to children’s interests and feedback and review who is taking part. This helps us identify gaps, strengthen our offer and encourage children to explore something new.

Our ambition is for every child to leave Kings Heath Primary with happy memories, wider horizons and the confidence to say:

“I can try. I can contribute. I can achieve.”
